Innovations in Autism

With the CDC estimating 1 in 36 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder, the need for treatment has become increasingly important and Ponte Vedra is increasingly recognized for new innovations to help address their needs. This has ranged from new initiatives like surf camps specially designed for autistic needs, world-class resorts achieving Certified Autism Center standards, and specialty programs designed for young adults over the age of 22.
The non-profit Helping Enrich Autistic Lives (HEAL) provides a range of services, one of which helps young autistic children become more comfortable in the water. Through their HEAL Surf Camp, they recognize the unique needs of this segment and help them get comfortable, whether standing up on a surfboard or paddling a kayak. While some experience this for the first time, others have been coming back for years, building an increasingly deep bond with the water. HEAL also plans to develop five adaptive parks, taking into consideration the unique needs of autistic children.

Some might not connect a world-renowned resort with autism, but in 2008 the Marriott Resort Sawgrass partnered with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) to become a Certified Autism Center — and the first resort in Florida to do so.  To achieve this certification, they have to have 80 percent of their client-facing staff certified, building a deeper understanding of how to help families or individuals with autism or sensory needs. Through this process, Marriott Sawgrass is better equipped to provide guests in this space with a memorable experience.

The Morris Center is a recent addition in Ponte Vedra that provides a range of services for both children and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders and learning difficulties. With over 27 years of experience, their interdisciplinary team provides a mix of intensive and frequent treatments to maximize the impact to their clients.

It’s not only young children that face challenges with autism, as they grow older, they continue to have special needs, but many services drastically drop off after they reach the age of 22.  This is often referred to as “the cliff” and this segment of the population is what Peace of Heart strives to address.  Through the development of a new Outdoor Enrichment Pavilion, this segment of the autism community will be provided an environment where cooking, organic gardening, animal care, boxing, music, and art opportunities will be provided.  This builds on the organization’s Peace of Heart Farm, where numerous raised beds for organically grown produce are sold to the community as well as chickens, goats, and even a mini pot-bellied pig.
